3/23/2026 - Imperial Motor Inn (Route 66)

It is a two-story complex with stucco plastering with an L shaped layout. Imperial 400 was a motel chain in 1959, and its buildings had a characteristic "Gull Wing" shaped roof (like this motel has) with Space Age connotations.  It went broke in the mid 1960's and sold out to new owners.

3/23/2026 - The Old Trails Inn (Route 66)

The Old Trails Inn used to be The Palms Auto Court aka The Palms Motel.

It was at one time a cabin court built in the 1930's.  It has several separate "cabins" as units for its guest.  "It promoted itself being "Clean, Air Cooled, Modern - Reasonable - The Home of Friendly Service."

5/16/2026 - Charles O. Brown House

Over the weekend I attend a concert downtown.  Before the concert we walked around the downtown area and looked at some old buildings of Tucson, AZ.

This is the Charles O. Brown House located 40 W. Broadway.  Built in 1876.  This listed as " The Old Adobo Patio."  Charles O. Brown house is one of Tucson's oldest territorial houses.

I read that this house is two dwellings, each facing a street and opposing each other on a north-south axis.  On the east side, the houses are linked by a series of rooms which lie in a straight line.  A wall and a carriage house border on the west, thus enclosing a patio in the center.  This house represents two distinct styles in Tucson.  Older section represents a territorial style closer to the Mexican origin and the latter building represents the American-Anglo version of the Mexican adobe with ornamental wood trim, columns and increased number of windowpanes.

3/23/2026 - Welcome to Needles Borax Wagon (Route 66)

Has you can see up a head is the entrance to Needles is the welcome wagon.  This wagon was originally part of the decor of the motel El Rancho Motel before it got torn down.  It wasn't a chuck wagon, it is a borax wagon, that was used to move out to borax (a type of salt) dug up at Death Valley to the railway sidings in the 1880's. These wagons were pulled by teams of eighteen mules and two horses.

On 4/18/2026, My mom and I decided to go search for stamps for the National Park Service.  We drove down to the University of Arizona campus and stopped by Tucson Bird Alliance.  This is a nature shop about birds and wildlife in the country.  They have a little front area that you can watch birds that come into the yard.  Inside there are a lot of different books to read.  There are some arts and crafts to buy.  They also have bird feeders, bee homes and little tables to put the bird food on,

Also, what this post about is you can get the Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area stamp.  Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area celebrates the region's natural resources, rich history, and heritage shaped by generations of Native American, Spanish and Mexican cultures.

3/23/2026 - Route 66 Motel (Route 66)

This motel is located right next to Carty's Camp.  It was built in the 1940's during WWII.

It is typical one store motel with a rectangular plan: a central office surrounded by six units.  Since the 1990's it has been used for single room apartments.

3/23/2026 - Carty's Camp (Route 66)

When we were leaving Needles, we back tracked the route 66 stuff we missed the day before.

On you left side of the road at 201 E Broadway St. you can see empty cabins, a former office building and to the left is the vacant service station.  This place was known as Carty's Camp.  It had a flat box shaped canopy that promoted, "Lunch, hot-cold drinks and Groceries and also gas, lubrication and batteries.

If you have seen Grapes of Wrath, you probably recognize this building.

William Carty and Dick Mansker opened it in 1923, before Route 66 was created.  William bought out Mansker and sold it to Howard Carmody in 1940.  At the time there was 28 cabins.

Carmody switched from Shell to Standard Oil.  When Howard left to enlist to the US Army in 1943, it was run by S. Stewart.  After the war Howard sold it to the Ames who ran it until 1971 with Chevron when they closed for good.

3/22/2026 - Wagon Wheel Restaurant (Route 66)

For the night we were staying in Needles, CA we went to a restaurant called Wagon Wheel Restaurant that is located on Route 66.  It was down the street from the hotel.  We walked around and saw a gift shop and dining area.  The food was good. I had a turkey sandwich.  The atmosphere was fun. A lot of Route 66 stuff around.

The Wagon Wheel Restaurant was not the original name. In the early 1950's the restaurant was called Lynn's Broiler. In 1978, it became Wagon Wheel Restaurant.

2/27/2026 - Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area - Marana, Arizona

This was a new place for us.  We have never been to The Marana Visitor Center in Marana, Arizona.  We learned a lot of things about the Santa Cruz Valley NHA and the Juan Bautista De Anza NHT.  I didn't realize there was some more history around the area of Marana.

The one of the reasons we went there is because they started caring the Santa Cruz Valley NHA stamp for your park passport.

2/27/2026 - Santa Cruz Valley National Heritage Area - The Postal History Foundation

2/27/2026 - My mom and me went to a new museum that we have never even heard of before.  It's located at 920 N. 1st Ave near the University of Arizona campus, and it is also a small mail center.  The place is called Postal History Foundation.  They have an exhibit of some things that the post office and carriers would uses in the late 1800's to the 1960's.

The first Post Office in Naco, Arizona was near the Mexico border.  They used different kind of tools that the mail employees used.  They used train, horses, mules, donkey in the earlier years and they did by walk or car.

Here is a wall that have stories from mail employees and artifacts that they used.

These were stamp vending machines that you bought with a few cents and get one stamp.  There were different kinds to choose from.

This was a Paymaster that was used in the Post Office.  This was for money orders.

Here are some of the badges that the mail employees wore for work.

Here is the outside of the building.  It's open Mon to Friday 8:30-2:30.  They have volunteers there looking through old stamps that have been used and collected over the years.

The other reason we went there is you can get the Santa Cruz Valley NHA stamp for your National Park Passport.  This stamp is only located in Southern Arizona.

Here are some websites for you to look at to get more information.

Go check it out.  It was cool to see and learn.

6/15/1992 - Yellowstone National Park (The World's First National Park)

On March 1, 1872, Yellowstone became the first national park for all to enjoy the unique hydrothermal and geologic features. Within Yellowstone's 2.2 million acres, visitors have unparalleled opportunities to observe wildlife in an intact ecosystem, explore geothermal areas that contain about half the world's active geysers, and view geologic wonders like the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River.

The park is located in three states, ID, MT and WY.  We visited the Wyoming part.  I went with my dad Bob, stepmom Cathy and Boozer the dog.  We were there for two days.

The above picture is my dad and I in front of the sign.

We saw a lot of different wildlife.

We saw Old Faithful Geyser, other geysers and water holes.

There were a lot of boardwalks along the areas of the geysers so you could see them closer.  You could feel the heat coming from the boiling water.

There was sun, then it turned to rain and around the afternoon it started to snow.  I have never seen snow in the summertime.  It was different but fun. There was a couple of places to stay in the park and at one of them we got the last room for the night.
